Summer Treats: Jean Talon Market

Chili plants at the market

My schedule slows down in the summer and I try to add some healthy habits. Sometimes they stick and sometimes… life happens. This summer’s focus is adding more fruits and vegetables.

I love the Jean-Talon market in Montreal and thought I’d share some of its yummy goodness.

Samples at the market
Fractal cauliflower
Colourful Tomatoes

Beans
Variety of mushrooms
What colour are carrots?

Purple garlic
Humble potato

I just have to point out the Fractal Cauliflower. It is called Romanesco and is a cross between broccoli and cauliflower. I have to admit that we haven’t been brave enough to try it yet. I love the patterns though!

I’ve been away from home for the past month and thought it would be harder to make changes but it hasn’t. Maybe because I’m starting fresh? Maybe because I’m not heading into meetings or commuting so there is more time? I head back to Vancouver in a couple of weeks and I hope I can keep eating yummy fresh food and taking the time to walk or run every day.

Cathy I hope you got the chance to try Romanesco cauliflower. I first tried it in Rome and I often buy it when it appears at the NYC greenmarkets. Like you I appreciate its geometry and the flavor is very nice too. It is like a mild broccoli but with a softer texture and a pleasant nuttiness that you won’t find in either broccoli or cauliflower.

I haven’t tried the Romanesco cauliflower yet. I’m hoping to find it in Vancouver and try it soon!
