Baking Bad in honour of last episode

29/09/2013 Leave a Comment

blue-crystal-candyTonight is the last season of Breaking Bad. We are excited to see what happens – and despite being sad that the show is ending, at least it seems to be going out strong and true to all characters. Don’t worry! No spoilers.

For the start of these last few episodes, I made ‘meth candy’ as described in the wonderful recipe by Sugar Hero. It is easy – and so fun to break up the candy in the cookie sheet:

Cooking
Time to Break
Final product

I’d definitely recommend making the candy! Some things I learned:

  • candy is really addictive
  • candy is inexpensive to make (not good for the previous point)
  • If you don’t have a thermometer, you can use the cold water test:
    • You want the the hard-crack stage: when heated syrup is dropped into cold water, it forms hard threads that break. The candy is definitely ready at this point and may start to burn soon.
    • The recipe says 290 – 295 F – go as high as you can without burning the candy (about 300 F).

I’ve made lots of candy now and in fact, we are offering it on our Etsy shop if you don’t want to make your own. Note: We may have to call them energy crystals once the Breaking Bad excitement dissipates 🙂

And for those who are also excited and sad for tonight’s finale, I’m recommending this hilarious parody.
