Public proclamation of exercise

14/11/2012 Leave a Comment

I’ve flirted with a standing desk and I’ve joined in yoga classes – but they don’t last. It turns out that I need a goal. When I did the Vancouver half marathon in May 2010, I managed to find the time to do all the training runs and other exercise. So, I’m taking to the internet to proclaim: I will turn from a couch potato into a stubborn turtle!

So what is my motivation and what are the plans?

What (where, why, who)

I have signed up to do a half marathon in South Africa! So, it is time to get in shape before the end of June. I’ll be doing this run with a good friend, Tammy. You should definitely take a look at her photos. Tammy lives in London so we can’t train together. But then I realized that the Vancouver half marathon has removed the killer hill in the middle so I should do that too. This has the advantage of roping in some friends in Vancouver to run with me. So far, I have Jenny and Amber meeting me once a week to keep me going – and Lisa will join us in 2013.

 How

I’m not happy with my current fitness level and although it is tempting to jump in and just go for it, the aging process might not allow that anymore. So I’ve created a schedule – what do you think? I can do 5 km right now but I’m forcing myself to start slow. If you have suggestions, please let me know!

Accountability

So I can’t figure out the best way to show you that I’m meeting my goals. I will make my fitocracy profile public and will try to log all my fitness details. Please feel free to shame me if you are so inclined. You are also free to join me if you want.

My running persona is ‘stubborn turtle’ and yes, that is a logo. Here is the T-shirt that I wore for the 2010 half marathon:
