I’ve been lucky to work with many great scientists and educators and now they are offering to join us on this blog! Lisa McDonnell helped me build a genetics education program in British Columbia. We now live in different parts of Canada but she’s going to share some of her teaching with short instructional videos.
One new way I’m exploring science education is by making short videos to explain some genetic concepts or experiments. I have a soft-spot for genetics: it has always fascinated me. I want people to SEE that anyone can learn about DNA; whether it is at home or at school. My first video is a DNA extraction using common materials.
I’ve probably done this same DNA extraction experiment about 1000 times, and I still love it! Every time I see the DNA I get excited. DNA!! Such a small molecule, seemingly simple, and yet so complex and powerful!
Give it a try. Whether you are taking the first step to exploring the exciting world of DNA or continuing your learning, I think you’ll find that getting your hands wet, dirty, and seeing DNA is amazing. That’s why I get so excited, because science is amazing!
