I have promised to add a photo a week from my travels. Some of my recent travels appeal to scientists so I’ll start with those. If not scientists, there have been a lot of birders.
I do have a confession to make – I’m afraid of birds. (well, flapping things) I get this fear from my mother and she has gone on some of these trips. Why do we do this? Well, we’ve seen some cool places but I don’t know if there is anything else going on here. You will also notice a lot of bird photos for someone who is afraid of birds.
This week’s photo: The Blue-footed Booby in the Galapagos
I picked the goofy-looking blue-footed booby for my first photo because they didn’t scare me by flying around my head. I mean, the finches described by Darwin are great but they had no respect for personal boundaries. This photo was taken without any zoom – you can get very close to the animals because they don’t seem to fear humans.
I feel a kinship with the blue-footed booby. I’m also clumsy. One explanation for the term ‘booby’ is from the Spanish word for clown…you can see it, right?
I might do more photos per week but I don’t want to run out! Or is that a good excuse to travel more? I’m visiting the Norwegian Arctic in June 2011.
